TEACHER WORKSHOPS

Animals in the Classroom

Having a live animal in the classroom can add an exciting and educational element to your teaching - not only for science, but all subjects. It is, however, important that you make the right choice for your circumstances - and for the animal.  Letting students take turns bringing home and "caring" for the animal is stressful and at times harmful. There can still be numerous opportunities for the students to take part in their care, but under appropriate conditions and under your supervision.   Learn what makes a good classroom animal ("pet") and have the opportunity to meet and learn about a variety of animals to consider (or rule out!). Assistance in obtaining and setting up your animal - as well as followup - is also available.

This program is available for individual teachers, as an inservice program, or for conferences.

 Incubating Eggs in the Classroom

Hatching eggs in any age-level classroom is an exciting and educational event. We offer a complete program or individual services - depending on your experience and time.  The complete program includes:

  • Rental or purchase of the incubator
  • Incubator setup
  • Delivery of one or two dozen fertile eggs
  • Weekly visits to confirm viability (not a guarantee of hatch) and show the chick growing inside the egg (candling)
  • Rental of brooder cage and equipment for maintaining chicks for the duration you would like to keep them
  • Return of the chicks to a farm
For a great introduction to the unit, add a "Storytime with Friends" program Students will learn how chicks are born on an age-appropriate level and meet some chicks and a rooster.
